Mohammed, let’s talk about a procedure that is currently popular not only among people in Kazakhstan. We are talking about rhinoplasty. How often do you perform this type of surgery?

— Yes, this procedure is currently very popular throughout the world, and Kazakhstan is no exception. I perform these operations every day, several times a day.

Do patients come to you for surgery for medical reasons, or is it usually performed for aesthetic purposes?

— Patients have different needs. Some genuinely require surgery for medical reasons. They may have breathing problems, injuries caused by road accidents or animal bites, or congenital abnormalities. More often, however, patients want to improve the aesthetic appearance of their nose. I frequently perform a combined procedure to improve breathing and change the shape of the nose at the same time. This is called rhinoseptoplasty.

— How is the operation performed? Do you use one specific technique, or are there several different methods?

— The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. We use the latest gas anaesthesia equipment, which does not cause side effects. There are many different rhinoplasty techniques, so each patient receives an individual approach and the most appropriate method is selected. I perform all procedures using an ultrasonic piezo device.

What makes this device unique?

— The piezo device replaces traditional instruments such as a chisel and hammer. Using an ultrasonic piezo device significantly reduces surgical risks, minimises bruising and swelling, and shortens the recovery period.

— How long does the operation take? Is it considered a complex procedure?

— Rhinoplasty is rightly considered the most complex procedure in plastic surgery. If a surgeon knows how to perform rhinoplasty properly, other cosmetic procedures should not be difficult for them. The duration depends on the complexity of the operation, but on average it takes about two hours.

— How long is the recovery period?

— Because I use the latest rhinoplasty technique with a piezo device, the recovery period is significantly shorter and takes approximately two weeks.

Mohammed, do you perform revision rhinoplasty? If so, why do some surgeons achieve good results while others do not?

— Yes, of course. I frequently perform secondary and even tertiary rhinoplasty. Many patients come to me because they are dissatisfied with the results of procedures performed by other surgeons. In most cases, I believe the reason is insufficient surgical experience. Continuous professional development, attendance at international conferences, and the exchange of experience are extremely important in plastic surgery. Modern medicine never stands still, so surgeons must keep up with the times. I also believe that a surgeon must have talent. Almost everyone can draw, but not everyone is naturally capable of becoming a talented artist.

— Can any nose be corrected, or are there cases in which correction is impossible?

— It can be corrected, but everything depends on the condition we are dealing with. In my practice, I have encountered extremely complex cases in which the patient’s nose was almost completely absent. In such situations, we make every possible effort to return the person to a normal life, so that they are no longer afraid to appear in public.
